A Forty-Five-Second Meditation

Is Meditation Too Much Time And Trouble?

If you haven't meditated before, you might think it's too much trouble to learn. If you do meditate, you know it can be difficult to find the time to do it consistently. So is there really a meditation you can learn right now that can be done in 45 seconds? There is.

Three Deep Breaths

Try this: breath through your mouth, and notice how your chest expands; then breath through your nose and you'll notice how your abdomen goes out more. You see, breathing through the nose causes the diaphragm to pull the air to the bottom of your lungs. This delivers a good dose of oxygen into your bloodstream, and into your brain. It also tends to relax you.

This is why meditators breath through their noses. It's healthier, and it is the basis of this forty-five-second meditation. You simply close your eyes, let go of your thoughts (to the extent possible), and take three slow, deep breaths through your nose, paying attention to your breathing.

The Rest Of The Story

Now, this won't get you into a deep meditative state, especially if you've never meditated before. Is this a reason not to do it? Not at all. You'll get what you get out of it, and that almost certainly includes a clearer mind and a reduction in stress.

Make it a ritual. For example, each time you get into your car, quietly do your three deep breaths. Having a regular "trigger" like this to remind you will keep you from procrastinating so often that you eventually forget to meditate altogether (isn't this typical when we don't make a habit out of the things we want to do?).

Want it to be a deeper experience? There's nothing wrong with just enjoying the relaxation created by three deep breaths, but you can go further, if you wish. Longer meditation will help, of course, but that isn't the only way.

If, when you have more time, you learn mindfulness, how to relax more fully, or better ways to let go of distractions in your mind, you can more effectively use that forty-five-seconds. You may even be able to get to that "alpha" state (brain wave frequency of 8 to 12 hertz) during your short meditation.

Don't worry if some say this isn't "real" meditation. We walk before we run, and not everything has to be difficult to be of value. Why not do a forty-five-second meditation right now?

Steve Gillman has meditated and studied meditation for over twenty years. You can visit his website, and subscribe to The Meditation Newsletter at: http://www.TheMeditationSite.com/newsletter.html

The 99 Most Essential Relaxing Classics [Amazon Exclusive]

An eclectic selection. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, you do get snippets of works. In a small number of cases you may even get more than one track from the same work, but these do not have consecutive track numbers. For example, you end up with two out of three movements of Gorecki's Symphony No. 3. However, at two pennies per track this is still five stars in my book.

 Rain for Sleeping and Relaxation

This is the sound of a calm, steady rain. This is a great recording for relaxing or sleeping. It's a very simple recording - one long 73-minute track of nothing but steady rain. Its strong points are in what it does not have. It does not have birds, music, volume spikes, extraneous sounds, wind noise, thunder, or interruptions - just steady rain. The sound volume level is essentially constant throughout. The sound quality is fantastic. You can hear individual drops! A fade out at the end and a fade in at the beginning allow continuous play via using "repeat play." This is the gentlest (Level 1) recording of rain in the four part rain series by "Sounds of Nature by Joe Baker."

Probably The Best Music For Relaxation and Meditation

Remarkably, "Probably the Best Music for Relaxation and Meditation" is exactly what the title says it is.  Once or twice a day, I launch this "sonic Zen garden" in Winamp, close my eyes, and allow the tension to drain away from me. I rarely listen to the entire track...because...after about ten minutes I'm ready to get back in the game.

 The Soul Of Healing Meditations

I'm new to the area of meditation, so when I picked up this CD I was skeptical. To my pleasent surprise, this CD was not only helpful, but has become extremely useful in my daily meditation ritual.

The CD playing time is around 45 minutes and takes you from listening to you breathing to listening to your heart to forgiving others to healing yourself. It is very relaxing and if you concentrate and work at it you can heal youself of all your troubles and problems. It is truly amazing what the body can do given the proper chance to do it.

If your new into meditation, or just looking for a change in your daily routine, try this one. I'm glad I did and use it on a daily basis.

Zen and the Art of Relaxation

This CD is extremely good for relaxation purposes. I light a candle and take a bubble bath to enjoy this one. It is very thought-provoking, narrative, and imaginative yet relaxing somehow all at the same time. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for some peace.

Music

 Music for Healing

I've used this particular cd in my home and in my work as a doctor of naturopathy, and the results have always been good. I've seen people and animals calm down almost instantly, and visibly become more relaxed.

I've used this cd with my 91 year old mother when she gets shaky and stressed; with my dogs when they want to jump and bark all around and I just want them to rest; with children I'd like to help simmer down; and with people who have come to me with problems like tension or hives. I use it, too, when I just can't get to sleep.

Not to imply this music "cures," but people (and animals) sure do seem to relax when it's being played, and sometimes that's all that the body needs to rebalance itself...or so it would seem to me through the experiences I've had and the observations I've made.

8 Minute Meditation: Quiet Your Mind. Change Your Life.

In recent years, mainstream Americans have begun to come around to meditation in a big way-and scientific studies are suggesting that the physical and mental benefits are solid and real. But to many, it remains something mystical and inaccessible...and spiritually-oriented tomes on the market don't do much to make it easier.

As interest in meditation continues to grow, this book offers a simple, no-nonsense program to help beginners experience reduced stress and increased focus in only eight minutes a day. Designed by meditation expert and bestselling author Victor Davich, this program teaches the basic principles of meditation while clearing up the misconceptions and myths that too often get in the way.

Mindfulness in Plain English: Revised and Expanded Edition

If you'd like to read about meditation and then go back to your regular life, don't get this book. Henepola Gunaratana, a monk from Sri Lanka and venerated teacher of Buddhism, warns us that vipassana meditation is "meant to revolutionize the whole of your life experience." In one of the best nuts-and-bolts meditation manuals, he lays out the fundamentals of basic Buddhist meditation, the how, what, where, when, and why, including common problems and how to deal with them. His 52 years as a Buddhist monk make Mindfulness in Plain English an authority on a living tradition, and his years of teaching in America and elsewhere give it the clarity and straightforwardness that has made it so popular. If you'd like to learn the practice of meditation, you can't do better. --Brian Bruya

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back

A young boy emerges from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven.

Heaven Is for Real  is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.

Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us.

Told by the father, but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready, there is a coming last battle.

The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching

What should we think when on the one hand Buddhism tells us that life is suffering and on the other we are told to enjoy life's every moment? Loved around the world for his simple, straightforward explanations of Buddhism, Thich Nhat Hanh has finally turned his hand to the very core of Buddhism and conundrums such as this. In the traditional way, Thich Nhat Hanh takes up the core teachings one by one--the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Twelve Links of Interdependent Co-Arising--but his approach is as fresh as a soft breeze through a plum orchard. For illustration, he dips into the vast stores of Buddhist literature right alongside contemporary anecdotes, pointing out subtleties that can get glossed over in other popular introductions. He also includes three short but key sutras, essential source teachings from which all Buddhism flows. Studying the basics of Buddhism under Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh is like learning basketball from Michael Jordan. --Brian Bruya

22 Day Meditation Course - Meditation Without Religion (Simple Meditation Programs)

This is a very simple 22 day meditation course to help you begin meditating, or, for advanced meditators - if you are "stuck" and don't feel like you are progressing.

The author has meditated for over a decade using this simple form of focusing on the breath. The much sought after "Jhana levels" 1-8 occurred early on - within the first year, and continually after that using this very simple system based on what the Buddha did - but, without the Buddhist jargon for it.

The action was physical that Buddha took - not based on religion - so, the author has removed the religion aspect of meditation so you can practice as the Buddha did so successfully.

Homedics ARM-CAN1 AromaSpa Flameless Candle Aroma Oil Diffuser

I purchased the AromaSpa Candle and couldn't be more pleased. I've had it for 3 months and I ritualistically turn it on almost every evening. I find it quite soothing and very realistic, with the flickering light. I have mine located where I am able to plug it in, unobtrusively. So, I generally leave it on until it turns itself off, in six hours. Since mine is plugged in, I have no problems using the diffuser, if I so desire, and it offers sufficient aroma to satisfy me, without overdoing it.
